Guest Blog Post: 5 Products for Glowing Skin on a Budget

You want great skin? But where do you start? You’re balling on a budget and quite frankly, who can even afford a $200 Microneedling session in this pandemic? Absolutely not. Listen, I understand that skincare can seem like an unnecessary luxury at times. There are so many “skincare influencers” that will boast about products with a price tag that will easily cost you a girl’s night out. You just simply can’t afford it, I get it. Okay, so now you start watching YouTube videos and start the DIY masks and toners and Apricot Scrub until your heart’s content. Don’t even get me started on that. It’s an esthetician’s worst nightmare!

Skincare shouldn’t be a luxury. You would nourish your liver by limiting your drinking and increasing your water intake, right? Being that it is the biggest organ on your body, your skin deserves a little R-E-S-P-E-C-T! It’s not the fact that we don’t have the money to take care of our skin, we don’t know the right products. Contrary to popular belief, those products will not cost you a vial of blood and your first born son. It is possible to find champagne products on a beer budget.

So, here are the top five skincare products that I recommend to my clients who are wanting to glow but also wanting to pay their rent the following month.

1. Cleanser: La Roche Posay, Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser. Retail Price: $14.99

This cleanser is gentle and hydrating and could be helpful for oily, dry and combination skin. It’s free of sulfates, parabens and oils. La Roche Posay is non-comedogenic, which means that it does not have pore clogging properties. I use this cleanser for my oily skin in place of my high-end cleanser when I want to be a little gentler in my regimen.

2. Toner/Acid: The Ordinary, Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution. Retail Price: $8.60

Now this is not a regular toner. Glycolic Acid is an Alpha Hydroxy Acid that is used for chemical exfoliation. This is used for texture and clarity of the skin. Glycolic Acid should be used 3-4 times per week and direct sunlight should be avoided. I use this, three times per week in my nightly regimen to get rid of those dead skin cells and promote a healthy smooth glow. *Not to be used if you have sensitive skin.

3. Serum: The Ordinary, Alpha Arbutrin 2% + HA. Retail Price: $8.90

This serum is great for hyper-pigmentation. It is vegan, cruelty free and silicon free. Alpha Arbutrin reduces the look of dark spots as well as helps with texture. This should not be used with any other acids due to the concentration of this product. I use Alpha Arbutrin with my nightly regimen, (when I’m not using Glycolic Acid, of course) and I’m sure to apply SPF when going into direct sunlight.

4. Moisturizer: La Roche Posay, Effaclar Mat Anti-Shine Face Moisturizer for Oily Skin. Retail Price: $32.00

This moisturizer gives you a mattifying, oil free texture. It also visibly reduces the look of pores. If you’re like me and struggle with oily skin, this product is the drug store HOLY GRAIL! The product is a tad-bit more expensive, but a little goes a long way and will possibly last you months. If you shy away from moisturizer because of your oily skin, this is the product for you.

*Bonus: La Roche Posay, Toleriane Double Repair Moisturizer. Retail Price $19.99

If your skin type is more on the Dry, Combination to Normal side. This moisturizer will be great. It is very light weight, however, gives you a little more moisture and hydration. As per all of the La Roche Posay products, a little goes a long way. This is worth the $20.00 investment. Remember…. Black Does Crack, If It’s Ashy!

5. SPF: Neutrogena, Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sunscreen 30+. Retail Price: $10.00

This is a great starter SPF. We all should be using an SPF of 30 or higher, every day when going into direct sunlight. SPF should also be re-applied every two hours. The Ultra Sheer does not leave a purple or white cast when applied, which is the norm for a lot of sunscreen brands. I have used this under my makeup when I go out as well as when I opt for an all-natural look. SPF is essential in your skincare routine because it fights against harmful cancer-causing agents and prevents premature aging. Also, when fighting hyperpigmentation SPF is essential!

All skin is different. We come in all shapes and sizes, so we are definitely not a one product fits all. I implore you to explore which products works best for you.

Ladies, the bottom line is this, you can care for your skin on any budget. Whether you are dropping cash on Chanel bags or clipping coupons for your Mocha Latte’, you deserve flawless skin! You deserve to look in the mirror, feel like a million dollars and know that caring for yourself is not a luxury but a necessity. All in all, you deserve to GLOW.
